Are you missing a tooth? There are several options for replacing one or two teeth side by side, one option is the dental bridge. Here are the details:
A dental bridge is ideal for an area with a missing tooth (or two) where the teeth next to the gap have been weakened by loss of tooth structure, large fillings or other restorations. A bridge consists of a full coverage crown on each of the teeth adjacent to the gap, which will help to protect and provide added support for those weak or compromised teeth, and a fake tooth (pontic) in the center to take the place of the missing tooth.
The procedure for a dental bridge can vary, but here is the general idea:
During your first visit, we will make sure you’re comfortable by numbing the area. Then we will prepare the support teeth by smoothing and shaping the enamel and removing some or all of the old restorations if necessary. Next, we will take an impression of the newly prepared area to create a mold of your mouth. Our dental lab will use this to mold to create your custom-made dental bridge; this process will take 2 to 3 weeks depending on the complexity of the bridgework. In the meantime, we will fit you with a temporary bridge to cover the prepared teeth and the missing tooth gap.
When your custom made permanent bridge has been created, your dentist will carefully place it over the prepared teeth and, after making sure it fits properly and functions well with your bite, will fix it permanently with a strong dental cement. A fixed bridge can take some time to install so we may schedule a follow-up visit depending on your needs.
