What Is a Dental Cleaning?
familyRoutine dental cleanings are a PREVENTIVE measure essential in maintaining good oral health. Each time you visit Fisher Distinctive Dentistry for a dental cleaning, our dentists will clean your teeth using a prophy jet, an instrument that emits a strong jet of water to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque). Using the prophy jet minimizes the use of sharp instruments to scratch off the plaque allowing for a more comfortable cleaning. After your teeth have been cleaned, our dental hygiene assistant will polish and shine your teeth and review oral hygiene instructions.

The time interval between cleanings varies for each patient. Most of our patients will visit us every six months for their regular dental cleaning and exam. Some of our patients are on annual check-up intervals as their rate of plaque build-up is below average, while some of our periodontal patients visit us every three or four months for TREATMENT cleanings. After your exam we will know which type of cleaning (preventive or treatment) is right for you and recommend the appropriate interval.

What Are the Benefits of Routine Dental Cleanings?
Routine dental cleanings have many benefits, including:

  • Helping to prevent tooth decay
  • Protection against gum disease (periodontal disease)
  • Preventing bad breath
  • Removing stains

HOME CARE
How Can I Take Care of My Teeth and Gums Between Dental Visits?
It is very important to practice good dental care habits at home to make sure that your smile stays healthy. Taking care of your teeth and gums should include brushing your teeth at least three times every day, flossing at least once every day and maintaining a balanced diet (avoiding foods with lots of sugar). We also encourage regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months. To help you better care for your teeth and gums, we have provided the following oral hygiene instructions for at-home dental care.

How to Brush Your Teeth:

  1. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
  2. Brush gently in a circular motion.
  3. Brush the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of each tooth.
  4. Use the tip of your toothbrush to reach the inner surface (behind) of your front teeth.

How to Floss Your Teeth:

  1. Wind about 18 inches of floss around your fingers. Most of the floss should be wrapped around one finger; as the floss is used, the other finger takes it up.
  2. Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide about one inch of floss between your teeth.
  3. Holding the floss tightly, gently saw the floss between your teeth. Then curve the floss into a C-shape against one tooth and gently slide it beneath your gums.
  4. Slide the floss up and down, repeating for each tooth.
